Our Colorful History

Originally built in 1869, The Gables Inn was the first hotel in Sausalito. For over 200 years, Sausalito has attracted the elite, notorious, artistic, and bohemian. In 1775, European settlers named the city “Saucito,” meaning “Little Willow” in Spanish, after the trees they found growing along its stream banks.
